Album Review: “Unfold” by Melody’s Echo Chamber

Since I wasn’t familiar with Melody’s Echo Chamber before, I was immediately entranced by the sound of this album. It’s not every day you hear something that so seamlessly blends the psychedelic sounds of Pink Floyd with the dirty guitar riffs of Jimi Hendrix, all with the ethereal vocals and mixing of Cowboy Junkies. Yet somehow, this album pulls it off.

When I heard the first track, “Pescheuse de Lune,” my mind instantly went back to the summer my friend and I listened to some of music’s most essential albums, one of which happened to be “Dark Side of the Moon” by Pink Floyd. The opening track is pure psychedelic rock, and is immediately juxtaposed with the next song “Ocean Road” whose opening guitar could have been pulled right from “Are You Experienced” by Jimi Hendrix (another essential listen from the previously mentioned list). I was instantly taken aback and knew that what I was listening to was something very different that I hadn’t heard in a while.

What truly blew me away was those sounds in combination with singer Melody Prochet’s ethereal vocals that are reminiscent of the mid-90s post-punk female-led bands like The Cranberries, Cowboy Junkies, and just a touch of Alanis Morrissette.

Overall, this album is a wild ride from start to finish and manages to blend together genres that you wouldn’t have previously thought would go together. If you’re looking for something new to keep you on your toes, I definitely recommend giving “Unfold” a listen…or two.
