The school’s Center for Psychedelic Research and Therapy is seeking to discover how the potential of psychedelic drugs – such as psilocybin, ibogaine, and ayahuasca – can help people with depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Medical professionals behind the studies hope to end the stigma surrounding psychedelic drugs, saying many untapped benefits could help those who are out of options.

Greg Fonzo, a psychiatry and behavioral science assistant professor and co-director of the center, said the center will work with different partners to assist with research and support.

Psychedelics are prohibited in most parts of the United States, however, the Texas House Passed HB 1802, which allows studies on the use of alternative therapies.

The trials are scheduled to begin sometime later this year.
