Album Review: “Pastlife” by Day Wave

Jackson Phillips began releasing music under the name Day Wave in 2015 when he released his first EP, “Headcase.” Since then, he’s toured the country with his traveling band and released an album and 3 more EPs, including his latest, “Pastlife.” A fusion of indie dream pop and new wave, this album evokes the sounds of some larger bands such as Wallows or Dayglow. When I think of this kind of music, I always think it sounds nostalgic. The looping guitar riffs and airy synths put you in a good mood and remind you of driving around in your friend’s car with the windows down, singing along to every word.

What it may lack in quantity, this EP makes up for in quality. Only 3 songs long, this album feels like one cohesive ride. Each song brings a certain warmth and peace to it, telling you that everything is going to be ok. The lyrics to the titular song “Pastlife” look back on the feeling of missing someone and simply wanting to be in their presence again, something everyone can relate to. This album represents a coming-of-age in many ways, and I don’t just mean that it sounds like it was taken from the soundtrack of your favorite teen movie. It reflects on the growth and changes we go through in life, specifically in our late teens and 20s.

Phillips is 27 years old and has released music that reminisces on days in the past while looking forward to the future. His sound is one that is hard to define, but completely enjoyable, nonetheless. Given the sounds of this EP and his previous works, I look forward to his next full-length album and seeing what journey he takes the listener on next.
