Album Review: Ex Norwegian – Spook Du Jour

Ex Norwegian – Spook Du Jour album cover

Ex Norwegian originated out of Miami, Florida, and launched at the 2008 CMJ music festival in New York City. The original band consisted of Roger Houdaille, Nina Souto, and Arturo Garcia. After Ex Norwegian’s second album, the band split and later regrouped with both Houdaille and Souto. The band is considered an American indie rock band but has been known to explore other genres with their sound.

Ex Norwegian announced their latest album Spook Du Jour in December of 2021 and released it on February 18th, 2022. The 13th album is made up of 12 songs, Thot Patrol and Teen Bakery were both released early to give fans a taste of the album before it was completely released. This album is lovely and is incredibly fitting for a transformative 90’s road trip, Teen Bakery and Cianca in particular. The sound is best described as power-pop meets stoner rock. The instrumentals and vocals blend and boost each other perfectly throughout the album and specifically in Center Mario Save as well as Save for No Future.

I’m a sucker for beautiful album cover art and this band definitely hits the mark. I enjoyed their music and I’m very much looking forward to their next album. Ex Norwegian is a hidden gem. Here’s to hoping that Spook Du Jour turns into a Spook Du Tour.
