Album Review: “Inside Every Fig Is A Dead Wasp” by Lunar Vacation

“Inside Every Fig Is A Dead Wasp” is the first studio album from Atlanta based band Lunar Vacation. Although this is their first full-length album, the band has been together since 2016, with the bulk of their output previously being a series of EPs consisting of a few songs each. Lunar Vacation’s songs trend towards the shorter side, rarely clocking in at over three minutes, with the entire 11 track album running just over half an hour. While their songs may be short, they still pack a punch, filling them with lots of energy and personality.

While the band consists of four members, the real star of the show is the voice of the lead singer, Grace Repasky, whose beautiful voice ties all of the songs together under a single identity. In general, I would say Lunar Vacation’s sound is similar to other female-led indie bands of the past ten years, like Snail Mail, Girlpool, or Daddy Issues. This is certainly not a criticism, as I adore all of those bands. Perhaps the standout track on the album is “Mold,” which sounds the most musically complex, with some almost Tame Impala sounding backing, to Repasky’s voice, which is layered to harmonize with itself. Another standout of this album is the band’s playful lyrics, like the track “Making Lunch (Not Right Now)” which satirizes the exhaustion of routine to emphasize ennui. While their lyrics are creative, they are usually used sparingly, with only a couple of verses per song. This makes them catchy and punchy without needing to drag on too long.

All in all, I would recommend “Inside Every Fig Is A Dead Wasp.” It’s got great vibes and is the perfect thing to pick one or two songs to put into rotation on a playlist. If you’re interested in indie pop music, Lunar Vacation is certainly a good band to put on your radar. They could definitely continue to release fun, interesting albums going forward.
