Album Review: “Barnyard” by Good Morning

Barnyard is the fifth album from alternative group Good Morning. There are twelve songs, and this album is on the shorter side at about thirty-five minutes. This album has a bit of a soft rock sound to it. Drums and guitar really seem to carry this album along with the sometimes-faded vocals.

“Wahlberg” is a good example of the faded vocals. The singer sounds like he away from the microphone while singing. This works well because it gives this atmospheric effect to the song. The sound fills the room.  In the rest of the songs, the singer sounds like he is more singing into the microphone. He doesn’t sound perfectly clear, but this works because the vocals and music sound more natural.

There are some instances where during a music break the sounds starts to distort or change a but then goes back to normal when the vocals come back in. This happens in songs like “Never Enough” and “Big Wig//Small Dog”. This is interesting because it makes it appear that the tone of the song is about to change but is doesn’t. It adds variety to the songs without blowing them out of proportion.

The song “Country” has a very long opening. The vocals don’t begin until about a minute and a half into the song. That can be cut down significantly and the song still have the same feel.

This album is a nice quick listen. Anybody who likes a softer rock sound and alternative music will like Barnyard.
