Album Review: “The Life of Guy” by By George

The Life of Guy is the second album by indie rock band By George. This is the band’s second album released just under a year after their debut album, Mighty Mango and a string of singles released in between both albums respectively.

The album has an infectious and fun sound with a garage rock twist to it as well, which listeners will find it impossible not to smile at. With 12 songs that clock in a total of 33 minutes, The Life of Guy makes use of its short time to deliver a vibrant and fun album that will have you singing along in the car or dancing to at home. The songs Relax, and Handsome Hobo, both previously released as singles earlier in the year, were ones that definitely caught my ear. Relax is a vibrant song with a catchy guitar riff with lyrics that talk about anxiety and living up to standards that seem impossibly high; themes that relate to today’s youth. Handsome Hobo is a slower and more mellow paced song about the anxieties of first love at the start of a relationship, but blossoms into something beautiful shared between two people. The song will remind listeners of a beautiful sunny day where all you can do is smile and take in the warm feeling the song provides.

Overall, The Life of Guy is a fun and vibrant collection of songs by a group of people who you can tell are having fun with themselves. The album plays as a tribute to the fun and mellow songs of the late 60s, yet still updated for today’s culture as well. Anyone who finds this album will feel as if they’re traveling cross country in a van full of peace loving hippies. Others may not appreciate the mellow vibe of some of the other songs off the album, but for those looking for something to listen to when they want to relax and unwind with a feel good beat to lift any spirits, look no further than By George’s The Life of Guy.
