SpaceX to build moon landing craft for NASA project

SpaceX is one of three companies NASA is designating to build spacecraft capable of taking humans to the moon.

Yesterday, U.S. Representative Filemon Vega’s office issued a statement saying it is great news for Brownsville and Cameron County.

NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken familiarize themselves with SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, the spacecraft that will transport them to the International Space Station as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. Their upcoming flight test is known as Demo-2, short for Demonstration Mission 2. The Crew Dragon will launch on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Credits: NASA

SpaceX is already in the process of constructing vehicles at its Boca Chica site, which will be capable of taking humans to space for its own commercial purposes.

The two other companies involved are Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin in Kent, Washington and Dynetics in Huntsville, Alabama.

One of the three will eventually be selected to participate in NASA’s Artemis moon mission program, which intends to land the first woman and a man on the moon in 2024.
