Album Review: “Spring” by Wallows

If you are a fan of Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” you may recognize the name Dylan Minnette. Minnette, who plays Clay Jensen on the show, is a vocalist and guitarist in the band Wallows. The indie rock trio also includes vocalist-guitarist Braeden Lemasters and drummer Cole Preston.

Spring is the group’s debut EP and it has already generated a fair amount of buzz online. Without a doubt, it’s an impressive albeit brief composition. Certainly, this is a very fun, upbeat album to listen to. It feels like the genre of indie-alternative music that would categorize them with the likes of Tame Impala and Real Estate.

The track “Pictures of Girls” feels like a modern rendition of a classic surf rock song. “1980s Horror Film” is the token slowed down ballad, but other than that all the songs are florid and cheerful. “Let The Sun In” and “It’s Only Right” would go unnoticed if you shuffled them into a playlist filled with songs by artists like Washed Out and Portugal. The Man. That being said, it’s also probably not everyone’s cup of tea. People who want to get a good impression of current climate of indie-alternative-pop-rock, look no further than Spring.
