Senate Tries To Avert Govt Shutdown

(Washington, DC)  —  The Senate is trying to avert a government shutdown.

The government runs out of money late tonight without an extension of funding.

The House passed a bill yesterday that extends government spending into late April.

Several Senate Democrats are blocking the bill in a dispute over healthcare for coal miners.

The House bill includes a four month extension of health insurance coverage for thousands of miners.

The group of Senate Democrats wants the program extended for at least one year.
