Now out of a small hiatus, Grouplove have a new album and bring you a matured version of their poppy sound that made them darlings of the indie world. Carly Ramey with KTXT takes you through their new album and ushers in a wave of anticipation for all to enjoy this new musical undertaking.

“Big Mess” is Grouplove’s much-awaited third studio album. The indie pop group has been on a one-year hiatus and hasn’t released an album since September 2013. With dance beats and lyrics about love, life and self-discovery, this album is a blast to experience.
The album kicks off with the single “Welcome to Your Life.” Keyboard player and lead singer, Hannah Hooper, welcomes listeners with dreamy vocals and a fast synth beat saying. Christian Zucconi, the band’s second lead singer, also adds powerful vocals that complement the song. Energetic and happy, “Welcome to Your Life” gives a great start to the album.
The song that that stands out to me the most is “Enlighten Me.” This song really proves that Grouplove has grown as a band artistically. They begin stripping down their sound and toying around with simplicity. Zucconi laments a struggle about letting go of something from the past, singing darker lyrics, “But I don’t feel like my life is real. I’m on the fence with common sense.” “Enlighten Me” gives the feeling that the track is being made as the audience listens to it, with a new layers being added to give it a wonderful build.
A couple other standout songs are “Good Morning” and “Cannonball”. The indie-pop song that just wants to make you dance is definitely “Good Morning”. The fast paced and upbeat sound is what makes this song succeed. “Cannonball” stands out simply because it rocks. Lyrics about making the most out of life are bellowed out against hard-hitting instrumentals.
As with any art form, music is a reflection of a culture or group of people and it takes the form of issues that are prevalent in the musician’s life. Grouplove is no exception to this trend. They have undoubtedly grown into a more mature group better equipped to handle the ever-changing landscape of issues in today’s world.
