The NFL is putting a halt on a fantasy football convention that was set to be held in Las Vegas.  The inaugural National Fantasy Football Convention that was headed by Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was canceled because of the league’s concerns about it being connected to a casino property.

The three-day event was scheduled to start July 10th at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino.  ESPN reports that players showed up could’ve been subject to a fine or suspension from the NFL.  More than 100 players were scheduled to attend and now those players will lose out on more than a combined one-million-dollars in marketing and appearance fees.

In an interview with Colin Cowherd, Romo attributed the NFL’s cancellation of the event to being financially motivated, saying “It’s like when you’re in high school and you don’t get invited to the party, it makes you feel bad. If they really wanted to just be a part of it, all they had to do was just call and ask. It would’ve been a lot easier, I think, than going about the process the way they did. We understand that these things come about and there’s big money involved sometimes from the NFL’s perspective. If we had known about the issue of the place or thought that was something that could’ve been an issue, the NFL could’ve told us that right away. That’s where it makes it interesting.”

It was previously reported the NFL went so far as to contact the mother’s of participating players to ask them to not participate, but this has not been confirmed nor denied by league representatives.
