Texas Tech Weekend Sports Recap

KTXT FM Sports Update LogoMany of our Texas Tech teams were in action this weekend. Here’s a recap of the games.

On Friday, the Tech soccer team took on Auburn, defeating the Tigers 2-1, marking their first trip to the Sweet 16 in program history. Alli Murphy’s goal in the 87th minute lifted the team to victory. Tech then went on to take on (2) Florida on Sunday, and despite coming back from a 2-0 deficit, the Red Raiders lost to the Gators 3-2. Tech ended it’s season 16-4-2, and was ranked nationally the entire season.

The Lady Raider basketball team were in action on Friday and Sunday at the United Supermarkets Arena, winning both games to go to 4-0 on the season. On Friday, the team took on the University of Arizona, holding off the Wildcats 57-54. Kelsi Baker, who missed all of last season due to injury, earned her second career double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds on the night. Sunday, Tech took on Morgan State, beating the Bears 65-57. Freshman Dayo Olabode led the team with 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Baker added 17 points to led the team to their fourth victory of the season. The team has earned almost as many victories as last season (6-24). The Lady Raiders next match-up will be in the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Bahamas on Nov. 28 and 29.

Tech football headed to Ames, Iowa looking to beat a 2-6 Iowa State team and earn their second victory in the Big 12, fourth on the season. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns in the match, and running back DeAndre Washington rushed for a career high 186 yards in the 34-31 victory. The victory places the Red Raiders at 4-7 on the season, while the Cyclones fall to 2-7, 0-7 in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders will play Baylor at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington for their final match of the season.

It was Senior Night for the Red Raider Volleyball team, where the team honored seniors Rachel Brummitt, Breeann David, Nicole Hragyil, Mikia Mills, and Sam Podraza, but the team couldn’t hold on, dropping the match to the University of Oklahoma 3-0 on Saturday at the United Supermarkets Arena. David, a leader during her career for Tech, earned her 1,000th kill, joining eight other players in the esteemed achievement. Brummitt, who is now the leader in digs in Tech history, had 12 on the night. Tech will play their final game of the regular season on Wednesday at Iowa State at 6:30 p.m.

Red Raider basketball took place after volleyball, with the men’s basketball team taking on Missouri State at the USA. Freshman Norense Odiase, who has been a huge factor for Tech so far this season, led the Red Raiders to an 80-68 victory. Odiase had 14 points, seven rebounds, and two assists on the night, while Devaugntah Williams led all Tech scorers with 18 points. The team is now 2-1 on the season, and look to earn another victory when they take on Northwestern State at home on Nov. 25.
