LUBBOCK – I’m Ciara Gaines with your KTXT Sports Update for September 3, 2014.

Texas Tech sports were in full effect this past weekend. If you missed any of them: here’s a quick rundown:

Up against a Central Arkansas team that refused to quit, the Red Raiders beat the bears 42 -35 on Saturday at the Jones AT&T Stadium. Despite two interceptions by Davis Webb, the sophomore quarterback threw for 452 yards in front of a crowd of over 60,000. Senior wide receiver Bradley Marquez had 11 receptions for 184 yards and two touchdowns, including a reception for 70 yards.

The Red Raider Soccer team traveled to Indiana this weekend to participate in the Notre Dame Invitational and won both of their games 2-1. On Friday versus Notre Dame, Hannah Devine and Janine Beckie both scored goals for the Red Raiders, and on Saturday, in the 93rd minute versus Eastern Michigan, Paige Strahan scored her seventh career goal for the Red Raiders. Tech has now moved up into  the top ten in soccer rankings.

The Volleyball team began their season on a high note, winning the Titan Classic at Cal State Fullerton. The Red Raiders swept the Titans on Saturday, 25-14, 25-18, and 25-22. It is the second time in three seasons that the Red Raiders have started 3-0. Volleyball player Lauren Douglass was named the Big 12 offensive player of the week in addition to being named the MVP of the Titan Classic.  The redshirt sophomore is making her debut this year for Tech after sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer rules.

And finally, Texas Tech Track and field runner Cierra White is featured in the August 25th issue of Sports Illustrated as one of its “Faces in the Crowd.” According to texastech.com, White, who won three gold medals for Team USA at the Under 23 NACAC Championships, was also named the USA Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the first Red Raider to hold the honor.

I’m Ciara and that was your KTXT Sports Update for September 3.
