Austin McNabb previews the Thursday Night match-up between the Texas Tech Red Raiders and N0. 24 TCU Horned Frogs.

The Texas Tech Red Raider football team takes on the No. 24-ranked TCU Horned Frogs Thursday at Jones AT&T Stadium in a Lone Star Showdown.

For Tech’s Big 12 season opener, Tech Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury said facing TCU will be a great challenge for measuring where his team is at.

“We’ll find out,” Kingsbury said. “It’s a great measuring stick. I mean they’re at the top of the conference. It’s going to be a great challenge. I’m not sure where we’re at as a team, but I know they’re really good.”

Tech will be looking to take down TCU for a second straight season since the Horned Frogs arrived to the Big 12 last year in which the Red Raiders won a 56-53 triple overtime thriller in Ft. Worth.

One of Tech’s biggest challenges this week will be to stop dual-threat TCU sophomore quarterback Trevone Boykin at full health which was not the case last year, Tech sophomore linebacker Micah Awe said.

“Boykin, he’s an athlete,” Awe said. “Last year, we played him with a broken ankle or whatever. And this year, you know, he’s full health, and he’s an athlete, and he has tons of athletes around him.”

Tech got off to a fast start last week against the SFA Lumberjacks, leading 28-7 after the first quarter. Tech co-Offensive Coordinator Sonny Cumbie said fast starts are important to the team.

“I was impressed with how we started last week,” Cumbie said. “It’s something we’ve coached and preached to our kids to get out to a fast start. If you want to play fast, you’ve got to get first downs and you’ve got to move the chains, and so for us to do that early is important to get everybody settled in and going.”

The game will start at 6:30 p.m. while being nationally televised on ESPN.
