Texas Tech College of Media & Communications Hosts “Reaching Audiences” Conference

Experts Explore Opportunities in Hispanic Media and Market Research

National experts in market research and Hispanic media will headline the “Reaching Audiences” conference on March 4 and 5 (Monday and Tuesday), sponsored by the Institute for Hispanic and International Communication and the Center for Communication Research in Texas Tech University’s College of Media & Communication.

The conference brings together industry and academic experts from around the nation for a series of interactive panels that explore current industry trends, such as multiple-screen media use and the growth of Hispanic-targeted advertising, as well as opportunities for enhanced collaboration across market and academic research. Panel discussions and keynote addresses at the conference feature multiple topics within the market research and Hispanic media industries.

Monday the conference will host the William S. Morris III Distinguished Lecture Series and the Cathryn Anne Hansen Buesseler Lectureship. The annual events present prominent voices in media and communication to the community.  This year the Buesseler series features Arturo Villar of Hispanic Market Weekly.  Esther Thorson of the Missouri School of Journalism will deliver the Morris lecture.

Other speakers include the chief research and insights officer for Time Inc; the president of Research Narrative, a media consulting firm with clients including Netflix and Viacom; the publisher of Hispanic Market Weekly and the director of business development for El Tiempo Latino/The Washington Post, among others.

“The Reaching Audiences conference is designed to bring together experts in market research and the Hispanic-oriented media sector to discuss the contours of today’s media landscape,” said Erik Bucy, Regents Professor of Strategic Communication and conference co-organizer.

Bucy said the conference website will feature video excerpts, photos and audio recordings of some of the sessions for free downloading after the event.
“Given the topics of discussion and caliber of panelists, these sessions should have broad appeal within the professional and scholarly communities,” he said.
During the conference, there will be live Twitter updates and panel summaries from members of the college’s social media lab: #ReachingAudiences.

The event also marks the inaugural meeting of the Institute for Hispanic and International Communication (IHIC), a body created to provide guidance to the institute regarding current trends in Hispanic and international communication. Members of the board include media professionals who are leaders in their respective industries.

“We are delighted to have such an accomplished and dedicated group guiding IHIC through the opportunities presented by technological, market and demographic change in this period of rapid media globalization,” said Regents Professor Kent Wilkinson, director of the institute. The inaugural council meeting coincides with the first day of the conference.

The two-day conference is free and open to the public. A full list of events can be found at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/comc/reachingaudiences/index.php.
