Album Review: The Shadow by Naked Giants

The Shadow is the latest album by the Seattle based rock/grunge group Naked Giants. This is the groups sophomore album. Going into this album, I have never listened to any of Naked Giants music, but this album is solid from track to track. The first track on this album, Walk of Doom sets the tone of what the listener is going to experience in this album. The shouting and continuous drumming makes the song sound like a rock anthem. High School (Don’t Like Them) conveys the same rebellious message as the intro with a message of going against the grain. Take a Chance has a different soft tone for the first half with these soft drumbeats, but the second half of the track is heavy drumming and guitar riffs galore.

Tracks such as Turns Blue and The Ripper are very emotional songs that really resonate with me. The soft vocals of Gianni Aiello give off these certain Nirvana/Kurt Cobain vibes, which would make sense since Seattle is birthplace of grunge. These songs are very calming in the first half than the second half picking up with more grungier sounds towards the end.

Tracks as (God Damn!) What I Am, Unpeeled, and Television are all solid tracks that keeps the listener engaged through the midpoint of this album. The track Better Not Waste My Time is a song about moving on from a past relationship with its mix between soft and heavy vocals. The lead single, The Shadow is a perfect embodiment of grunge music at its finest with a beautiful guitar solo towards the end. The final track, Songs of the Sleep is a soft and smooth track with a pop-rock sound that wraps the album up nicely.

The Shadow is a rock/grunge album that has amazing tracks and will keep any old/new listener on alert when the band makes new music. As for now, this album is going to be in my daily rotation. The Naked Giants made a solid album and made a new fan in me.
