Sports Update for November 18

KTXT FM Sports Update LogoAfter defeating Prairie View A&M 8-0 on Friday, Texas Tech heads to Florida to take on Auburn at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium in Gainesville, Florida at 2 p.m. on Friday. This will be the third meeting between the two teams, according to TexasTech.com, with Auburn leading the series 2-0. Tech is looking to move on to the third round for the first time in school history, after putting up one of their best seasons in program history. The winner of the match will move on to the third round on Sunday.

Former Tech defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstadt is under criticism after current DC Mike Smith accused the former of releasing the Red Raiders defensive signals after he resigned in September. Smith told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on Monday, “It’s not right to me, it’s not fair to the kids. So if that’s how that person wants to handle business, they can handle business that way. I sure hope I don’t run into him anytime soon.” Wallerstadt, who is currently the defensive coordinator at Louisiana-Lafayette, denied the allegations, saying through a statement he has never shared any defensive signals and that “Smith would do well to simply execute their own game plan instead of trying to blame others for what may be their own shortcomings.” Wallerstedt resigned on September 18 after allegedly showing up to football facilities under the influence of an unknown substance.

Tech Men’s Basketball will participate in ESPN’s College Basketball Tip-Off Marathon, facing LSU today at the Pete Marovich Assembly Center. Tech will tip-off at 8:30 p.m., the last hour of the marathon. Tech opened the season last week against Loyola Maryland, winning the game 71-59. With the win, head coach Tubby Smith moved into 67th in all-time coaching victories in NCAA Division I basketball.

And finally, Fansided has reported the Tech Baseball recruiting class is ranked first in the Big 12 and 14th nationally. The Red Raiders, who made the College World Series for the first time ever last season, recruited three of the nation’s top 31 players. Coach Tim Tadlock told TexasTech.com, “This signing class is two-fold for our staff,” Tadlock said. “It was very good before we ended our 2014 season in Omaha, and continued to progress throughout late summer and fall. There is no doubt that all Red Raiders before us and most notably our 2014 team helped build this class with the success we had late last spring.”
