Texas Tech University’s new Research and Technology Park is set to have a completion Date of next year. The new facility will be located on fourth and Marsha Sharp, just west of Texas Tech Health Science Center. The groundbreaking team which consisted of Chancellor Robert Duncan, President Duane Nellis , city of Lubbock and Texas Tech officials, whom all dug gold plated shovels into a sand box, due to recent rain that made the original site inaccessible. The project awaited three years until the board of Regents accepted the project this year and President Nellis had this to say.

NELLIS: “we’re excited to get things running, I’ve only been here a little over a year and this was one of the first things I wanted to get started, and develop phase one.”

Phase one of many will consist of a forty thousand square feet of flexible space. The University will spend 29 million dollars on this project, which is a lot of money, but their intentions are for accommodating students’ needs and supporting the local Lubbock community.

NELLIS: “The fact that we are being more innovated. Survey over current student body last spring over 80 percent said they wanted more entrepreneurial opportunity for themselves and this is a great example for how we are doing that.”

Texas Tech University had a huge increase in students enrolled this year with 33,000 and are looking at a new record of enrollment of 40,000 students by 2020. With this new facility, students will have the resources they need to “dream no little dream” a phrase used often by former Chancellor Kent Hance. I am Ralph Barrera with KTXT news.
