“I have submitted my resignation to Coach Kingsbury effective immediately because I want the best for the Red Raider program, and this will allow them to go in a different direction on defense. I love our players and this school and have only their best interest in my heart and mind. I wish Coach Kingsbury every success this season.”

UPDATE: 1:18 p.m. central: According to ESPN, Wallerstedt was fired after showing up to team facility under the influence of an unknown substance.

Texas Tech has fired defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt, according to multiple media reports.

Wallerstedt came to Tech last season when the Red Raiders hired Kliff Kingsbury away from Texas A&M. He served as defensive coordinator for the Aggies.

Tech’s defense has struggled this season, giving up 499 rushing yards in their last game against the University of Arkansas.

Mike Smith will be taking over for Wallerstedt. He will serve as the sixth defensive coordinator in the last six seasons.
