Texas Tech has confirmed defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt has resigned. According to ESPN, Wallerstedt showed up to team facility under the influence of an unknown substance yesterday. Wallerstedt came to Tech last season when the Red Raiders hired Kliff Kingsbury away from Texas A&M. He served as defensive coordinator for the Aggies. Texas Tech released a statement on behalf of Wallerstedt, according to RedRaiders.com, saying: “I have submitted my resignation to Coach Kingsbury effective immediately because I want the best for the Red Raider program, and this will allow them to go in a different direction on defense. I love our players and this school and have only their best interest in my heart and mind. I wish Coach Kingsbury ever success this season.” Tech’s defense has struggled this season, giving up 438 rushing yards in their last game against the University of Arkansas. Mike Smith will be taking over for Wallerstedt. He will serve as the sixth defensive coordinator in the last six seasons.

Former Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington held a press conference yesterday where he finally revealed the reason he quit. According to WFAA in Dallas, Washington says he resigned because he “wasn’t true to his wife after 42 years.” He did not take any questions during the press conference. Washington led the Rangers to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011 and finished his run with the club 664-611, the most winningest manager in Rangers history.

And finally, a few of your Texas Tech teams are in action this weekend. Tech volleyball hosts the Lone Star Showdown this weekend, playing in a double-header against Abilene Christian at noon and Weber State at 6 p.m. The Red Raiders take on the Air Force at 1 p.m. on Saturday. This is the final weekend of non-conference play for the 9-0 volleyball team.

The Tech soccer team is in Stillwater today to participate in the Oklahoma State Invitational. The Red Raiders, who are 7-0 and ranked number 6 in the country, play Tulsa today at 5 p.m. and Memphis at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
